A Bit of History!

The original Riverview Diner. The Riverview Diner was located on River Road, along the banks of the Susquehanna River, Just North of Harrisburg. From this dramatic location the Riverview overlooked the longest stone arch railroad bridge in the world. The Diner was in this location for 49 years, until it was transported to Maine in 1990 for restoration.

Several owners through the years have operated the Riverview Diner. It was known throughout the Harrisburg area for its terrific breakfast and informal and friendly atmosphere. Countless weary customers have been happy to stop at the Riverview over the years from families on vacation, truck drivers heading for Pittsburgh or Philadelphia to business people on route to Washington or New York. Also, students, tourists and generations of high-school kids have all flocked to the Riverview.

The Riverview is a Classic of Art Deco design. The rounded corners and curved surfaces reflect this popular style. The late 1930's and 1940's have been called 'the golden age of the Diner'. It was towards the end of this period that the influx of soldiers returning from the war created the demand for Diners. The styles from this period have become classics, epitomizing the image, which most people have in their minds when they think of Diners. The Riverview is an original example of this vintage of Diner. Details such as the stools, the range hood, ceramic tile walls and floors and the blue stained glass roof windows are all unique.

Like Many Diners, which were located on what were the busy highways of the time, the Interstate Highway bypassed the Riverview in the 1960's. As traffic decreased, business gradually slowed down.

The Riverview underwent a meticulous restoration in 1990, the work taking almost a year to complete, bringing it back to its original condition. It was then shipped to Covent Garden, in London, where it opened as 'Fat Boys'. The Diner’s final journey was made in 2001 to here in Ashford where the original name has been restored and the Riverview story continues…
